Saving Serengeti

Throughout over 50 expeditions in 170+ countries, explorer Johan Ernst Nilson has seen animal species dwindle away and disappear in front of his eyes. In this short documentary, we follow Johan Ernst Nilson on his 7-day walk through the Serengeti to raise awareness and funds to stop the illegal poaching of African wildlife. Illegal poaching in the Serengeti National Park poses a significant threat to the region's wildlife, disrupting its biodiversity and ecological balance. This unlawful activity targets various species for different reasons: elephants are often poached for their ivory tusks, rhinos for their horns, and big cats like lions and leopards for their skins or as trophies. Animals like wildebeests and zebras are sometimes poached for bushmeat, which not only threatens the species but also the integrity of the Serengeti ecosystem and its iconic migration patterns. The motivations behind poaching range from financial gain to subsistence needs, with ivory and rhino horn fetching high prices on the black market. This lucrative aspect of poaching attracts organized crime syndicates, making anti-poaching efforts complex and dangerous. Continuous efforts, including improving local livelihoods, enhancing law enforcement, and raising global awareness, are essential to effectively combat illegal poaching in the Serengeti and ensure the survival of its unique wildlife.

About About Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tanzania, is one of the most famous and important natural wildlife sanctuaries in the world. It spans approximately 14,763 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), making it one of the largest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. The park is renowned for its vast, open grasslands, which provide an ideal habitat for wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros) as well as cheetahs, wildebeests, giraffes, and many other species.

One of the most spectacular events in the Serengeti is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and other antelopes. This mass movement is driven by the search for fresh grazing and water, and it follows a predictable pattern that is one of the most impressive natural events in the world. The Serengeti's biodiversity and ecological significance are immense, offering critical insights into the processes of natural selection, wildlife behavior, and ecosystem management.

The park is not only a haven for conservationists but also a draw for tourists from around the globe who come to witness Africa's iconic wildlife in its natural habitat. Conservation efforts in the Serengeti are crucial for protecting its unique wildlife and habitats from threats such as poaching, habitat destruction, and climate change. These efforts ensure that the Serengeti remains a symbol of wild Africa and a testament to the importance of preserving natural landscapes for future generations.
