Jon Oringer is a serial entrepreneur and the founder of the popular microstock photography site, Shutterstock. Oringer pioneered the subscription based microstock photography business model when he created Shutterstock in 2003. Jon Oringer originally founded the company to sell his own images, but soon recognized that his work alone would not satisfy his customers' demand.
In response, Jon Oringer decided to become an agent as well, so he could offer other people's work as a complement to his own. By combining a personal interest in photography with a first-hand knowledge of the demand for diverse and compelling imagery in today's marketplace, Jon Oringer set out to provide high quality photographs in a way that he thought would make sense to his customers. The company has enjoyed robust growth since its inception; it grew from 30,000 royalty-free stock images in 2003 to over 11 million in February 2010, and over 18 million in April, 2012. In 2009, Oringer was selected 41st on the Silicon Alley 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential entrepreneurs, investors, executives, and technologists in Manhattan.

Jon Oringer is an accomplished entrepreneur and the founder of Shutterstock, a company that revolutionized the stock photography industry. In 2003, Oringer launched Shutterstock with 30,000 of his own photos, seeking to make high-quality images more accessible and affordable for a wider range of customers. His innovative subscription-based model allowed users to download unlimited images for a set price, which disrupted the traditional per-image pricing structure. This approach positioned Shutterstock as a global leader in the stock image marketplace, appealing to both individual creators and businesses in need of cost-effective visual content.
Before founding Shutterstock, Oringer honed his skills in the tech industry, earning a master’s degree in computer science from Columbia University. With his background in technology, he was able to build the platform that would serve as the backbone for Shutterstock's rapid growth. Over the years, he expanded Shutterstock’s services to include not only images but also videos, music, and custom content, further solidifying the company’s position in the digital creative space. The company now serves customers worldwide, offering a vast library of creative assets and tools to enhance visual storytelling. Although he stepped down as CEO in 2020, he continues to serve as Executive Chairman, guiding the company’s strategic direction. His entrepreneurial success has made him a respected figure in both the tech and creative industries, with Shutterstock remaining a key player in digital content creation. Oringer's journey underscores the importance of blending technology and creativity to drive business innovation and growth.
