Roberto Dutesco is a Romanian-Canadian artist, filmmaker, and poet whose creative journey spans more than three decades and more than seventy-five countries. Born in Bucharest in 1961, he began his career in Montreal as a successful fashion photographer, contributing to iconic publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Rolling Stone. His trajectory shifted profoundly in 1994 when he traveled to the remote island of Sable, a narrow sandbar off the coast of Nova Scotia, and encountered its legendary population of wild horses. This meeting marked the beginning of what would become his life’s defining project: documenting the untamed beauty and spiritual resonance of the Sable Island horses.
Over the course of three decades, Dutesco returned again and again to the island, creating one of the most comprehensive artistic records of these animals ever produced. His imagery has been presented worldwide in museums and galleries, including his long-running exhibition in SoHo, New York, The Wild Horses of Sable Island, which became one of the city’s most enduring single-theme shows. Beyond photography, his work extends into film, most notably the award-winning documentary Chasing Wild Horses, and into global advocacy through IAMWILD, a platform he founded to inspire awareness and action for environmental preservation. His art is at once a personal meditation, a cultural exploration, and a call to protect the fragile ecosystems that connect us all.
Roberto Dutesco’s work is grounded in a vision of art as both personal expression and global responsibility. While his early career established him as a photographer of style and beauty, it was his encounters with the natural world that brought forward a deeper sense of purpose. His images of the wild horses of Sable Island are not simply portraits of animals but reflections of resilience, freedom, and the raw poetry of existence.
The reach of his work extends far beyond the walls of galleries. Through IAMWILD, Dutesco has aligned his art with conservation initiatives, helping to amplify efforts that led to the designation of Sable Island as a Canadian national park. His philanthropy includes donations to charities focused on wildlife protection, children’s education, and cultural exchange, ensuring that his creative practice leaves a lasting impact on both communities and ecosystems.
Internationally, his exhibitions have opened windows into the delicate balance of wilderness and human imagination, appearing in cultural institutions across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Whether at the United Nations, the World Expo, or intimate gallery spaces, his photographs communicate an elemental truth: that nature and humanity are inextricably bound, and that art has the power to awaken us to this relationship.
At the heart of his philosophy is a belief in connection. Dutesco views the lens not only as a tool of observation but as a medium for communion, a way of dissolving the boundary between subject and viewer. His images invite us to remember that to see the wild is also to see ourselves.
