The Transformation Behind Article 22

CORE ONE Global Initiative

CORE ONE + Article 22

Article 22 has partnered with CORE ONE to launch a global initiative that harnesses the transformative power of inner peace to create lasting change. As part of this collaboration, Article 22 has designed prayer beads made from PEACEBOMBS - beads crafted from shrapnel collected from Laos' hidden war. These pieces are more than just jewelry; they are symbols of hope and resilience, turning the remnants of war into expressions of beauty and peace. Available online, these prayer beads empower individuals to wear and share peace across the globe.

To amplify the campaign’s message, CORE ONE and Article 22 have produced a short documentary, featuring music by Massive Attack. This compelling film showcases Article 22’s journey in Laos, where devastation is transformed into symbols of peace. The film highlights the journey of turning war remnants into symbols of peace, aligning with the campaign's message of inner peace fostering global harmony.

Together, CORE ONE and Article 22 are committed to shaping a world where inner peace inspires individuals and communities to build a more united future.

Article 22

Article 22 celebrates stories of positive transformation and makes real impact through jewelry handmade in Laos. We partner with artisans in off-the-beaten-track places to create modern heirlooms that are beautiful and meaningful. PEACEBOMB, our first collection, is jewelry handcrafted by traditional Laotian artisans from Vietnam War shrapnel and other debris. A virtuous circle, each piece helps MAG (Mines Advisory Group) clear unexploded ordnance, making land safe and providing new metal to artisans to craft more original favorite and new designs. The brand has been recognized as pioneering not only the transformation of weapons into jewelry but also the tangible value of fashion that looks and does good by customers in over 40 countries and press including the LA Times, PBS Newshour, Vogue, NBC, Wall Street Journal, and Marie Claire.

Declaration of Human Rights

The U.N. Universal Declaration on Human Rights

December 2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the inspiration behind our namesake - the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As the chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Eleanor Roosevelt was the driving force in creating the 1948 charter of liberties intended to avoid the atrocities of WWII from being repeated. The declaration was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 December 1948 in Paris and was the first time that countries agreed on a comprehensive statement of inalienable human rights Article 22 states that everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Legacy of War

Legacy of War

Legacy of War Foundation is an international charity established in 2017 by photographer Giles Duley, dedicated to supporting civilians affected by conflict. The foundation operates localized, sustainable, beneficiary-led projects in countries such as Ukraine, Rwanda, and Lebanon, aiming to empower communities by returning power, funding, and assets to their hands.

The organization's mission is to assist individuals and communities in rebuilding their lives after the trauma of war by providing tools, training, education, and other support—whether physical, psychological, or economic—that enables them to shape their own futures. Legacy of War Foundation also advocates for "NO MORE WAR" and strives to create awareness about war’s long-term effects on civilians through photography and art.

Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $2.5 million to support communities impacted by conflict. Their projects are designed to be self-sustaining within five years and are built from the ground up with direct input from their partners, reflecting their priorities of sustainability, affordability, and education.

In addition to their on-ground initiatives, Legacy of War Foundation educates and campaigns around the impact of conflict. Their "No More War" project, launched in 2021, highlights the costs of twenty years of war following 9/11 with artistic collaborations to drive conversation and create change.

The foundation operates with a commitment to efficiency, ensuring that 90% of the funds raised go directly to their projects. They stand for equal rights and opportunities, aiming to set an example within the sector by avoiding the need for expensive offices or inflated wages.

Laos

One of the poorest nations according to the World Bank, Laos also has the unfortunate distinction of being the most heavily bombed country in history per capita. Between 1964 and 1973, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the Secret War was waged in neutral Laos. To contain the spread of communism, American B-52s dropped an average of one bomb-load every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years. 80 million of the 250 million bombs dropped failed to detonate, leaving a deadly legacy that plagues the agrarian population today. DISCOVER THE STORY. And yet, Laos should not be defined by this war torn past. Like a treasure chest, the country has incredible biological diversity, 47 ethnic groups, and a living craft culture of weaving and natural dyeing.

Elizabet Suda photo

Elizabeth Suda

New York native Elizabeth Suda, designer and founder of Article 22, wanted to answer a simple question: “how and by whom are the goods we consume made?” After two years in the Merchandising Department at Coach, she packed her bags and traveled to Laos. It was 2008 and she was without a smart phone or a plan, but she was prepared to discover. Upon arrival in Vientiane she began knocking on the doors of local women-based textile businesses. She was on a mission to understand how local, sustainable crafts made by women could be plugged into the global fashion market.

Recognizing that market linkage and design are major constraints on artisans, she founded ARTICLE 2 when she met artisans in a rural village melting US bombs into spoons. Having studied History at Williams College and Oxford University, she was beguiled by her lack of awareness of the Secret War in Laos 1963-1974 which left a legacy of 80 million unexploded bombs. She created the Peacebomb bracelet with the idea of buying back the bombs. Since, Article 22 has developed into a global business, selling an evolving collection of jewelry and home goods to customers in 40 countries including thoughtful icons like model Angela Lindvall and actress Olivia Wilde.
