Mercado Global is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to empowering Indigenous women artisans in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala and Honduras. Founded in 2004 by Ruth Álvarez-DeGolia and Benita Singh, the organization connects artisans to international markets, providing sustainable income opportunities, business training, and access to essential tools like sewing machines and looms.
The organization's mission focuses on transforming the lives of Indigenous women, their families, and communities by weaving together financial support, education, and market access. By partnering with major retailers and offering technical training, Mercado Global enables artisans to improve their weaving and sewing skills, fostering financial independence and leadership within their communities.
Mercado Global's impact is evident in its collaborations with luxury brands such as Stuart Weitzman, Mara Hoffman, and Levi Strauss & Co. These partnerships have led to the creation of sustainable and ethical fashion products, including zero-waste denim collections handcrafted by Indigenous women artisans.
